More about me:
I am a Gonville/Bauer Student at Caius College and a PhD candidate at the Faculty of History, University of Cambridge. My academic research recently won the prestigious Royal History Society's Rees Davies Prize, and I have been awarded the C. A. Bayly Dissertation Prize by the Centre of South Asian Studies, University of Cambridge. Before that I received a First Class degree in History from the University of Sheffield.
*For History University Learners only*:
I specialise in the History of Science and Medicine, Modern British and South Asian History, Imperial History, and Global History. I am in the process of developing my current research project on speech and language pathology in colonial India, and I am a part of a network of scholars at Cambridge and beyond working on the cultural and intellectual history of Britain and India. My archival research is presently based on colonial records in the British Library, but I am able to advise on a range of different essays/topics related to the fields above. I can help by giving advice on essays that are source-based or historiography-based, or with revision content for examinations. My students have received First Class marks. Please get in touch for a consultation.
I have taught a variety of subjects and topics both online and in person, and I've tutored many students privately and for top-quality tuition companies. I am passionate about education and I have always found teaching incredibly rewarding. My students have hit their target grades and beyond and have received first-choice university acceptance. I've always taken a holistic approach to teaching, which means that I work with students to improve their overall education, learning, and knowledge. But my lessons are focussed on grades and what examiners expect of students on exam day. In using that approach I have seen the best results.
I am DBS checked.
Here are some reviews of my tutoring:
"I would definitely recommend Tom as a tutor. He helped my daughter understand her A level History course in particular for the English History and politics paper and helped her achieve the high A level grade she needed for her university offer."
"My daughter says he has really helped her understand historical events which she has not been able to fully grasp in three years at high school...Surprisingly my daughter is considering A'Level history as one of her subjects once she completes her GCSE's as she enjoys it so much, hence in just a few weeks his teaching method has made such a difference."
"Tom has been tutoring our son for a few weeks now. In this time our son appears to have made good progress, particularly with exam technique and understanding exactly what is required by each question. He has also given tips on revising which are son found really helpful. Tom has been punctual, polite and gives valuable feedback."
My lessons are highly focussed and they demand high levels of concentration so that we can move through the revision material quickly and efficiently. I aim to bring clarity to students' thinking and help them develop a complete understanding of their topic. Tutees will learn how to think critically and write succinctly and cogently. Reading and writing skills play a big part in my tuition, and I encourage all of my students to read widely around their topics and practice writing about them. Knowing how to read with purpose and write effectively, argumentatively, and persuasively are crucial skills that I always seek to emphasise.
