I want to contribute towards my local community more and tutoring is a good fit with my skills. I will provide tutoring for free once a week (initial lesson set to £9 on website, but can be free thereafter) - ideally to a student who is a hard worker but struggling at school and needs dragging up to a better grade in their Maths (or Science).
I currently work as a scientist for a major pharmaceutical company, although my main passion is mentoring and tutoring enthusiastic young people who want to improve their grades at school. I have completed work for a PhD in Biosciences at the University of Birmingham. Following this I completed 8 months training as a lecturer, before leaving to enter chemical industry. My preferable subject to teach is Maths, but I am also able to teach both Chemistry and Biology at a primary and secondary school level.
I have almost 5 years of experience of one-to-one tuition. I have a very good success rate with all of my pupils. I regularly taught and mentored undergraduates at both Bachelors and Masters levels at the University of Birmingham. I have also tutored both primary school and secondary school students to very high success.
My aim as a tutor is to create a deep understanding and confidence in answering exam questions. My philosophy is based on the idea that learning happens in an environment of mutual respect in which the student is encouraged to think and make new connections for themselves.
My experience has been that one-to-one personal tuition has a unique value to students because of the ability to resolve the students’ personal barriers to learning in a way that lays the foundations for a deep and lasting understanding of the subject.
