I am a retired University Professor of Applied Mathematics (London Metropolitan University). I am Swedish by birth but have been UK resident since 1955. I am fluent in both Swedish and English.
I did a year at a Harrow Tutorial College in 1965 (tutoring up to A-level in Maths and Physics) before taking up my Research studentship in 1966 and Lectureship in Mathematics at the (then) Sir John Cast College in 1967.
My teaching at the University was mainly in the applied maths area and numerical analysis which is where my research interests have been focused. I taught at all levels from 1st year ancillary maths for (e.g.) Psychology Students, to supervision of several Ph.D. students.
I have also done some private tutoring in the last few years. Some of this was voluntary work with the Access Project where I tutored at A-level.
I am just looking for one or two committed students to work with through the academic year at a pace that suits them. I have a great deal of experience teaching basic maths (calculus etc.) to 1st year University students who were NOT voluntarily there to study maths. I believe I have learnt to be very patient with students finding new techniques hard to grasp and I remember how rewarding it was to see so many of these students succeed in an area they would never have envisaged.
Preferably (and for my stimulation) this would be at A-level : Further Maths / Mechanics / Core/Pure. I do not envisage tutoring S. or D though I did enough workshop supervision in my University days to manage S1 if necessary. However I am equally happy to do some year 11 GCSE work (I currently commit to a volunteer programme at William Ellis school through Action Tutoring).
I can travel (if parking is available) but one advantage with home visits (for 16+) is that I have Mathematica and MATLAB software for demonstration licensed for educational use.
