I have worked as a teacher for over 20 years; most recently at a two of London's top independent schools.
I completed my PhD in Education and Big Data at the University of Cambridge in 2022. As a result, I am familiar with both statistical and qualitative research techniques. I am also a published author, and I have won multiple prizes for my academic excellence.
I have been a careers adviser also, and have successfully supporting numerous applicants to Oxbridge and leading Russell Group universities over many years.
As an active researcher, I support tertiary students with their study and research (social sciences and public health with both quantitative and qualitative methodologies).
I am passionate about education and computer science. That enthusiasm and my deep understanding of how to inspire learners, build motivation and to support rapid progress, has lead to exceptional results sustained over 20 years of teaching: Over my career the most common grade achieved by my students has been A/A*. More importantly, my students routinely make outstanding progress and exceed their predicted grades; many go on to study computer science at Russell Group and American universities (including: Cambridge, Imperial, Kings, Edinburgh, Stanford, etc.)
Part of my success comes from the fact that I am a trained school counsellor and understand that a holistic approach to learning yields the best results. I also know well how to support neurodiverse students and students with additional learning needs.
20+ years of teaching Computing, ICT and Physics in top London day schools. In this time, I have taught numerous exam boards at GCSE and 'A' level. I know the exam boards' requirements well - such insight helps my students to maximize their marks in public exams.
I have a wide grounding in the social sciences and can also teach sociology, psychology, public health, epidemiology and related subjects (at various levels).
Over many years, I have advised and supported students through the UCAS process, with many gaining offers from their preferred universities, including Cambridge, Imperial, and UCL.
I have also taught statistical and qualitative research methods across a range of levels, and I have supported post graduate students in their studies in various subjects.
My approach is tailored to the needs and goals of my students. It is also based on a strong understanding of the habits of 'expert learners' , backed up by extensive academic research.
At the beginning, we will discuss these needs and goals, and design a clear path. For GCSE and A level students, this is often in consultation with parents.
Based upon this discussion and agreed path, it may be that tutoring involves, targeted exam support, study skills, and organisational help; alternatively, it may focus more on extension and enrichment. In many situations, writing support can make a transformative difference.
To meet students' individual needs, my approach is built on years of practical experience, a knowledge of exam board requirements, and a deep appreciation of the psychology of learning and the importance of mental wellbeing.
Building confidence, motivation, and student agency are key foundations to learning. A sense of fun also goes a long way. Based upon these supports, acquiring core knowledge and mastering exam technique leads to quick gains at GCSE and A level. Knowing how to write exam answers in an examiner friendly style gives a significant boost to students' outcomes.
