Hello prospective students!
My name is Harry and I live in the beautiful city of Brighton on the South coast of the UK.
I am a professional Secondary School teacher and private tutor, but also a writer and a musician and someone who is passionate about a number of different subjects including politics, literature, drama and science.
Teaching is my number one passion though. I’ve been doing it for so long that it seems like second nature to me. I love getting to know students and figuring out the best way to teach them something and that becomes even easier and more fun with one-to-one tuition!
I have been teaching since I left university eight years ago. I have taught in Secondary Schools for the past three years, before which I worked as a teacher of English as a foreign language in Brighton and abroad. I am also an experienced one-to-one tutor.
Secondary English
I am well prepared to teach Secondary School students who need extra guidance, especially those working towards their GCSE or A-level exams. I have taught a number of the key texts that schools use and am happy to prepare for new texts that individual students need.
I excel at improving essay writing in students and use a variety of methods and techniques to help them revise and learn so that they can make progress and attain the results that they deserve.
Secondary Drama
I am a student of literature and an amateur playwright and I use to assist students who are having difficulty in the essay writing component of drama courses. In terms of the written part of drama exams, I can use a number of different resources and strategies to help students improve their results.
TEFL – English as a Foreign Language
On the other hand, if you are looking for someone to teach your child English as a foreign language, or you are yourself an adult looking to improve your abilities, then I have all the experience necessary to help you move towards your goals, whether that is Cambridge or EILTS exams or simply improving your conversational English. I have taught students of varying ages and nationalities and have a wealth of resources and knowledge to draw from.
Primary School Students
I also am confident in teaching primary school students who need extra tuition. Having myself done homeschooling with my step-daughter in year 6,I know how difficult keeping up with all the work sent home was. I can help your children keep on top of things and make sure that they are ready next year if you feel that they’ve fallen behind, especially in the core subjects of Maths and English.
My approach to tutoring students is simple, but effective. I always aim to make my lessons as fun, inspiring and engaging as possible, shaping the strategies I use to suit particular students. There are three main things that I will always seek to do in order to be sure that students I am teaching succeed in achieving their goals.
Firstly, I use a variety of methods to find out what gaps students have in their knowledge, whether that is skills they need to develop or things that they need to know. This sometimes involves some form of verbal or written assessment and other times can be learned by a frank conversation with the student or parent/carer.
Secondly, I fill those gaps using a number of different techniques. These techniques are always adjusted to the student’s particular needs and abilities and I am extremely creative when it comes to adapting lessons to suit different students. For one student a simple but clear explanation will do; for another student, a more lengthy and immersive approach might be needed to fully understand. With some students, it may take several different methods before they are able to grasp the concept because they need to visualize it in a particular way.
Thirdly, especially when students wish to prepare for specific exams, I repeatedly target problem areas so that students build a bank in their long-term memory of the knowledge they have been taught. It takes a long time for children to permanently learn something and it is only by repeatedly revisiting learning that they are able to master the processes they will need to excel. I provide a wide range of resources to help students practice and improve on their own and encourage students to take an active approach to their learning, helping them to help themselves.
