I taught secondary school science for many years and I am also a very experienced PhD qualified private tutor. My main work now is a science and maths tutor for a well known education provider based at Stroud College. A major portion of this work is teaching A Level Chemistry and Biology. I received my PhD in molecular biology from Cardiff Medical School and my PGCE from Durham University. I understand and am compassionate with the needs and fears of struggling students as well as those who need just something extra, and can tutor effectively across the whole spectrum of student confidence and ability levels. In some years I have marked A level exams which has helped to give me an in depth understanding of how to do well in exams.
I am also CELTA qualified and have experience teaching English as a foreign language.
After pursuing medical reasearch I moved on to teaching. Then, having taught science at secondary level for many years, for my later teaching years I specialised more and more as a tutor. I have years of experience in Biology tuition and now also have a good deal of experience tutoring GCSE level Maths.
I am confident that where a student wants to work, but perhaps finds some difficulty in applying themselves, then I can be of great help. The results my students have achieved prove this to be so.
My effectiveness as a tutor are founded upon in depth subject knowledge and great awareness of application of subject knowledge to exam technique. I develope exam focus in students, so that mark accumulation is maximised in line with a students efforts and potential. This takes a sympathetic and disciplined approach, and a touch of good humour also helps.
Every student is different; on first meeting I work to develop a relationship of confidence and trust, encouraging a study plan that will aim to meet the student’s particular needs. I advocate the development of good study habits, and have a positive approach which is aimed at building self-assurance and an atmosphere where the student is comfortable and feels a sense of progression and achievement.
